She carries a world on her hips
No champagne flute for her lips
No twirls or skips between her fingertips
She carries a pearl in perfect condition

What once was hurt
What once was friction
What left a mark
No longer stings…
Because Grace makes beauty
Out of ugly things

Grace finds beauty in everything

All you U2 fans out there will recognize these lyrics from “Grace”, a song on the “All You You Can’t Leave Behind” album. While I love a lot of U2, going all the way back to the beginning when I was in high school, I would have to say that this is my favorite U2 song. There is something about the pulsating bass, gentle guitar, and semi-melancholy way that Bono sings that appeals to me. But most of all, it is a celebration of grace, a concept that blows me away day after day.

When I think about my life and ministry in Japan, I see a lot of beautiful things. How did I get such an amazing wife? Look at these four beautiful children! How could I end up serving in an organization that has championed missional innovation for four decades and still pushes boundaries? Because when I look deep in my heart, I can’t see how anything good could come from me.

Then I see her walking down the street… Grace. She shows up and through her miraculous touch, all the junk in my life gets redeemed. All my foolish thoughts and acts, my selfish heart, my pride and conceit, somehow Grace works to turn it all around and into something beautiful.

Honestly, deep down, I have trouble undesrtanding grace. Why would Jesus lavish his grace on me?  It smacks at my own self-centered concept of justice. Who really deserves it?

But today… today I am going to live in it. Walk hand-in-hand down the street, because, ummm, she sure makes life beautiful.

Grace finds beauty in everything
